What the assignment covers
Coverage in manufacturing and process facilities where the hazards are specific and the plant has its own emergency procedures. Officers walk routes defined by the plant using its area and unit names, covering process areas open to them, flammable and combustible liquid storage, dust-generating equipment and collection systems, ovens, furnaces and heat-producing equipment, and warehouse or shipping areas. Notification follows the plant's chain, which often means the control room or shift supervisor rather than a general building alarm. Rounds are logged by plant area reference.

Have the plant address and gate, which system is impaired and which units or areas that affects, the plant emergency notification procedure and who the officer calls, orientation and badging requirements with lead time, PPE requirements, restricted or escorted areas, whether production continues during the impairment, and the shift supervisor contact.

A person assigned to nothing but looking, on a defined route, throughout the impairment. Plant response teams respond to events; a fire watch exists to find one early in an area that has lost its automatic detection or suppression. The two are complementary, and the post orders should state exactly how the officer notifies your team when something is found.
Can officers enter process areas on rounds?
Only where the plant authorizes it, after any required orientation, with the correct protective equipment and with any escort the plant requires. Some areas will be excluded and covered by operators instead. Define the route, the exclusions and who covers excluded areas before the watch begins, so the coverage the fire official expects is actually delivered.
