Fire watch is a temporary measure in which a person is assigned to walk a defined area on a set schedule, watching for fire, smoke and hazardous conditions, and to alert occupants and the fire department if anything is found. It substitutes human observation for a fire protection system that is out of service. It is a stopgap rather than a repair, ending when the system is restored and the fire official releases it.
How it works
The defining characteristic is that the assignment is dedicated. The person performing fire watch has no competing duties, because the entire value of the function is uninterrupted attention on a route. Four things are being provided: early detection by a human where an automatic system cannot detect, a means of warning occupants where notification appliances are silent, immediate notification of the fire department, and a written record proving both were in place. Fire watch is used in several situations, most often during a sprinkler or fire alarm impairment, during and after hot work, and in some buildings under construction or renovation. It does not restore the level of protection the building is designed to have; it reduces the interval between ignition and response while the system is unavailable.
